Temple History

Sree Krishna Swamy Temple is more than 5000 years old, situated at Edavetty near Thodupuzha in the Idukki district of Kerala, India.

Lord Krishna at Edavetty, presides in the form of DHANVANTARI.

In the Hindu epic of Mahabharata, Nakula was the fourth sibling of the five Pandava brothers. Nakula and Sahadeva were twins born to Madri, who had invoked the Ashwini Deva. Both Nakula and Sahadeva are called Ashvineya (आश्विनेय), as they were born by the blessings of Ashvinas.

Nakula with the blessings of Ashwini Deva built this temple when Pandavas were in exile (Vanavaasa). Ashwini Deva’s are believed to be the doctors of Gods and Masters of Ayurveda.

The temple is surrounded by Oushadha Vana (Forest of Medicinal Plants and Trees) and four other Lord Krishna Temples built by the other Pandavas (known as Anchambalam in Malayalam). It is believed that Vana Durga guards this extremely dense forest.

They are at Thodupuzha, Kolani, Muttom, Edavetty and Perumpillichira.

  • Temple at Thodupuzha was built by Yudhishtira, also known as Dharma Puthra and the eldest among Pandavas. (History says that the deity was missing for a long time and it was found and reinstalled by a Yogeeswaran).
  • Temple at Kolani was installed by Bheemasena, son of Vayudeva. Even today we see Bheemasena’s foot print imprinted at Uravappara near Kolani,
  • Arjuna, son of Devendra installed the Sree Krishna Swamy temple at Muttom.
  • The temple at Perumpillichira was installed by Sahadeva.

The temples at Thodupuzha, Kolani and Muttom face east. The temples at Edavetty and Perumpillichira face west. It is advisable to visit these five temples during the month of Vaisakha (last week of April to last week May).
